We walked toward the blacktop road at the far end of the yard. It was a chilly fall night. I remember how the wind blew through the pecan trees out by the road. We moved toward the yowling — a deep, guttural, otherworldly groan. I’ve never heard anything like it, and haven’t since. It was the sound of a creature in horrible pain. My mother was alarmed by it, and hung back a bit. I pressed forward, got to the ditch, and saw in the beam of my flashlight the source of the sound: her cat, lying in the road, having been struck by a car.
