“I hope gay and lesbian Americans will give full consideration to supporting me,” writes John McCain
In what’s apparently a first for a GOP nominee, McCain does a written interview with the gay press. He doesn’t break any policy ground — but it sure is a departure (so far) from an election four years ago that featured Republican mail casting John Kerry as a tool of the gay agenda.
It’s McCain in classic form, praising gay friends and role models at length, wanting to be left out of social policy issues to the degree permitted, but winding up on the right when pressed.
Blade: Do you foresee a day when the federal government will recognize civil unions or domestic partnerships performed by states?
McCain: I honestly don’t know.
